This new job is a 70% salary increase from my old job (doing content review/QA work). I interviewed quite a bit and talked to bunch of recruiters over the next 4 ish months but I was able to land a full time documentation specialist role that I will start next Monday. After 2-3 months, i tweaked my resume a little to emphasize the documentation work I was doing at my regular job which along with having a technical writer position was a major boost during my job search. It wasn’t enough to quit my day job but it supplemented my income quite nicely. I managed to land my first technical writer job (part-time) after a couple weeks of looking back in April. One of my 2021 New Years goal was to get a full time writing job. Take every interview as a learning experience and eventually you will land a tech writing position that you are content with. Different industries are going to be looking for different characteristics so you can’t take any rejection personally. Just like any other profession, you need to practice your craft until you are confident enough to showcase your skills in a vocational environment. The recruiting and hiring manager told me they found my cover letter compelling which is why they were so keen on bringing me on board. I had zero experience in the field and 1 month after I completed my program I had a technical Writing job offered to me. There you will get a broad array of tech writing practice with various industries. Consider completing a Technical Writing program through an accredited university. There are plenty of industries that don’t require those type of skills, although they are helpful. No, you do not need to learn how to code unless you are going into software writing/API documentation specifically. There are so many variables that go into answering your question. The interns at my office make more than that. Unless you’re living in a rural area, 45k is pretty darn low.
